The Trial Before Caiaphas

9th century
Fresco
Convent Church of St. John the Baptist, Müstair, Switzerland

On the left are the "many false witnesses" of Matthew 26:60 and Mark 14:56. On the right, Jesus stands before the enthroned Caiaphas. His raised right hand signifies speech. In the Gospels he is silent until Caiaphas asks if he is the Messiah. Then he says, "Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven" (Matthew 26:64, c.f. Mark 14:62).
